The True Joy of Giving
By: Jacqui Odell

Most of us have been in both positions: The giver and the recipient. And while a certain amount of joy can be gleaned from being a recipient- especially for children- an enormous amount of joy comes from giving.

Not withstanding the release of endorphins- the brain's natural feel good kick- giving also allows for one to feel good about themselves, promotes a feeling of satisfaction about their own life, and provides feelings of peace, purpose and fulfillment.

I live with the philosophy that when we're blessed, we bless back. No act of giving is too small and giving is not at all restricted to monetary gifts. The gifts of listening, helping with a chore, doing a favor, sharing what we have; the list is endless and all gifts are valuable.

I have been at both ends and while I have appreciated the help that has come to my family in our times of need, I give back every chance I am able. There is no comparable feeling.

I have been offered help and offered payment for certain things I do, and I almost always turn down such offers. I know I shouldn't, but it's a pride thing. When I do something for someone, I genuinely wish to help. I expect payment for a regular job, not working to hopefully make someone else's life a bit easier. However, when we turn down offers for help, we do not realize it, but it hurts those offering to help. When we turn down offers for help, we are denying those offering said help the chance to feel the joy of giving. Most people on this earth will not offer genuine help if they cannot do so. And most people offering help are motivated only by the desire to share what they have with others. Bless back.

The next time you are offered help, no matter what that offer may be, do not turn it down! Swallow your pride and allow that helpful person the true joy of giving! And when you can, pay it forward and bless back!
