Leadership Challenges Of Being A Young Leader
By: J Charles Clark

When putting together a team you need people who have different strengths and talents. This can be a challenge for a young leader because sometimes you have to put people who may be more talented than you on the team.

So what is a young leader to do:

1. You need to understand that your team has to be balanced with people who have strengths in the key areas of your objective. To do this you need to make a list of the six or seven key tasks needed to accomplish your objective and make a list of the strengths you need to accomplish them.

From there you need to find someone who is naturally intuitive in that area. This is someone who is naturally gifted in that area. And make sure that that is what they focus on exclusively.

2. Understand that not everyone will be good in all areas, if you make people focus on their weaknesses they will burn out quick. The key is to make sure they focus all their efforts in their area of strength.

This is where you will really start to see quantum leaps in your teams progress.

3. You need to make sure your expectations are crystal clear for each task that needs to be accomplished. You can not manage what you can't measure.

Everyone needs to measure up to an objective, the clearer the objective the better. This will also bring focus to your team members.

It's a lot easier to discuss whether a job is being done, if you can measure the outcome. When it's vague, you will get vague results.

Leadership is a challenge, but it's one worth taking.
