The Man in The Glass
By: Jim Hart

We should all be aware of this truth...

The only person you will have to live with for the rest of your life is you. There is no certainty that your parents, children, brothers, sisters, friends and spouse will always be there for you. But, you are guaranteed that as long as you are alive, you will reap the rewards of what you have done with your life or, suffer the consequences of neglecting yourself. Your knowledge, skills, talents and abilities are what will make you happy and able to live life to the fullest.

There is only one person in the world that can make you rise to the occasion, only one person you can truly count on and that person is you. If you don't put forth the effort towards self-improvement now, and everyday, you are limiting your ability to represent yourself correctly and therefore the amount of success you reap during your lifetime. When I say success, I mean all forms of success including spiritual, financial, physical and emotional.

We are not measured by what we take from this life. Rather, by what we give. There is a poem that sums it up best known as:

THE MAN IN THE GLASS

When you get what you want in your struggle for self

And the world makes you king for a day,

Just go to the mirror and look at yourself

And see what that man has to say.

For it isn't your father or mother or wife,

Whose judgment upon you must pass.

The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life,

Is the one staring back from the glass.

You may be like Jack Horner and chisel a plum

And think you're a wonderful guy.

But the person in the glass says you?re only a bum

If you can't look him straight in the eye

He's the fellow to please-never mind all the rest,

For he's with you clear to the end.

And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test,

If the man in the glass is your friend.

You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years

And get pats on the back as you pass.

But your final reward will be heartache and tears,

If you've cheated the man in the glass.
